Cuckoo Hall Academy - Edmonton, London
Cuckoo Hall Academy is an “outstanding” rated Ofsted Primary Academy. It has 900 pupils at present and this number will increase to 960 by September 2015.
The school wanted to improve its outdoor play provision with a number of new installations for the Early Years and Key Stage Two pupils. It had been quoted by two other play equipment companies, however they hadn’t quite captured the needs of the academy.
Area Sales Manager at Sovereign Play Equipment, Leigh Kosta, was called into the school by their Marketing Manager, David Littlejohns. After several meetings regarding the Early Years play provisions with David and Head of Early Years, Erini Tooulis, Leigh and the team were able to present a definitive design and cost which was extremely well received.
Sovereign was awarded the initial contract and then 12 months later, they were successful in securing the installation for the Key Stage Two area. Both installations comprised of play equipment that had been chosen because it would challenge the children physically, and allow them to develop their social skills whilst having fun. In addition, the Story Area extended the schools’ learning provisions by providing it with an outdoor reading area.
Phase one: Sovereign installed a Trim Trail on wet pour, synthetic grass and bonded mulch in the early years play area. Playground markings and Interactive musical panels were added to engage the children and encourage imaginative play. A Play Lodge was also included providing somewhere the pupils can go, to simply sit, relax and talk; again aiding social skills. The Story Area makes for a great outdoor classroom where teachers can read to pupils in natural surroundings and the Toadstools are a great imaginative touch for the children to sit on.
Phase two: The team installed two ageappropriate Adventure Towers for the Key Stage Two Area, encouraging co-ordination, confidence and balance as well as turn-taking and physical development.
Cuckoo Hall Academy now benefits from two new age-appropriate play spaces that encourage the development of physical and social skills in an exciting environment. The children have a mixture of stimulating and relaxing areas and the school is prospering from a new learning space.
“We were quoted by other play equipment companies, but felt that Sovereign had really understood the brief for our new early years play area and interpreted our needs perfectly. We were very impressed with the design and cost, as well as the work carried out by Sovereign. So much so, that we invited them back to quote for our Key Stage Two area! We were again impressed, and the children now benefit from two exciting, age appropriate play spaces.”
