Lyncrest Primary School in Northampton has seen an increase in pupils engaging in sports activities after its playground has been successfully transformed into a practical active play zone.

Sovereign Play Equipment acted as designer, manufacturer and installer for the project and worked with the school to create a visually attractive and interactive sports area that encourages physical development.

Justin Mottaz, Area Manager at Sovereign commented: “The school wanted to improve its outdoor play provision with something that would encourage physical development and could be used at break times, in sports lessons and during afterschool clubs.”

“We produced plans for a vibrant extracurricular sports zone at the school, incorporating a durable sports court with colourful safety surfacing and court markings. Our quote came in less than other suppliers – this meant that the school had funds left over to buy musical instruments for its Year 6 pupils.”

The project was made possible after the school secured Sports England’s Primary Spaces funding. The installation was complete in less than two weeks and included the construction of a steel sports court and multi-use games area (MUGA) with goal ends and hoops for various sports activities. This included the erection of surrounding steel fencing acting as a viewing barrier and ball rebound wall to stop balls leaving the court. The area was completed with non-slip safety playground surfacing and court markings.

The area can be used by pupils of all ages at break times, during sports lessons and in sports clubs. It boasts a variety of sports activities, including football, netball and basketball.

The project has resulted in 70% of pupils taking part in extracurricular sports clubs.
