A new interactive playground has been opened by the Mayor of Worcester following the completion of a project at one of the city’s special schools.
The first phase of the new equipment was unveiled at Fort Royal Community Primary School by Councillor David Tibbutt and boasts a wealth of new play and learning facilities. Equipment supplied by Sovereign includes an array of music panels, activity sensory panels for role play, a roll over bridge with disability access, a multi-sports area for playing basketball and football and timber trail physical activity equipment.
The school’s outdoor environment also benefits from toadstools and benches for seating, as well as a giant roadway for trikes, bikes and wheelchair use. The areas were developed using £20,000 of funds collected by the school since it opened in September 2007.
The school is now planning to embark on phase two of its project. Click here for the full article and comments from the school.
Children at Mugginton CofE Primary School in Ashbourne are celebrating the installation of their new playground after an official opening by the Rt Hon Patrick McLoughlin.
The project, carried out by Sovereign, transformed the school’s grounds into a stimulating and challenging play environment for pupils. Comprising a number of adventure facilities to promote physical development, as well as hand-eye and hand-foot coordination – equipment includes a tower deck with play bridge, adventure trail components, scramble net, climbing panel and fireman’s pole.
Darran Hine, Sales Director at Sovereign commended: “We worked closely with the teachers at Mugginton CofE Primary School to ensure the chosen equipment met its aims of fulfilling aspects of physical development in the school.”
“The new play equipment has added a new dimension to our play ground and has been the source of great excitement amongst the children. It has offered new physical challenges that have allowed our pupils to grow in confidence” concluded Jane Moore, Headteacher at Mugginton CofE Primary School.
This has been a real team effort. Pupils from the school council played an advisory role which helped develop the design and the playground was made a reality with the help from the Friends Of Mugginton School, who fundraised raised over £6,000 for the new playground.

We have launched a new online tool to help public sector organisations and communities search for funding to improve and develop play spaces for children.
The tool is free and is available to organisations including Schools and Parish Councils, throughout the UK, to search and identify most appropriate sport and recreation grants for individual play-related projects. Funding grants can be searched for by location, project focus and status of the scheme application, before further grant information is provided and the application process can begin.
Darran Hine, Sovereign’s Sales Director, commented: “Knowing where to find additional financial support can often be half the challenge when searching for grants to develop or improve outdoor play and learning spaces. The road to funding isn’t always easy and our tool aims to ease this process by helping customers identify suitable funding bodies and start in their quest to develop outdoor offerings to children.”
The tool is a part of Sovereign’s efforts to ease the funding process for customers following government funding cuts to play schemes and the increasing concern on physical activity across the four UK home countries.

Members of the Parents and Friends Association at Heanor’s Corfield Infant School have been praised for their hard work after securing the installation of brand new adventure play equipment supplied by Sovereign Play Equipment.
The play equipment was unveiled at the opening of the school’s summer fayre, where a plaque was presented by MP Nigel Mills to congratulate the PFA’s hard work and fundraising efforts. Installed by Sovereign, the new equipment includes a wealth of components to encourage hand-eye co-ordination and physical activity, and includes a clatter bridge, stepping stones, swing board and a parallel rope walk.
Darran Hine, Sales director at Sovereign commented: “The aim of the project was to increase the opportunities for outdoor play for the children, encouraging them to be active and healthy by extending the school’s existing tyre park with a variety of equipment. We worked closely with the school to ensure its chosen equipment would benefit current and future pupils at Corfield.”
Kathryn McKinley, Headteacher commented: “It was decided that the outside play area needed extending to provide more opportunities for the children. The PFA has worked hard over the past year and raised the funds to purchase the adventure play area through Summer Fayres, Christmas Fayres and raffles, which were well supported by the parents, friends and neighbours of Corfield Church of England Infant School. The children were very excited to see the equipment and could not wait to start climbing on it.”

A report on physical activity for health has been published and contains new physical activity guidelines for all four UK home countries.
Start Active, Stay Active covers the early years, children and young people, adults, and older adults. The report is the first of its kind to contain UK wide guidelines and aims to ensure consistent messaging across the four countries about the importance of physical activity, risks and links to poor health.
It is also the first time guidelines have been produced in the UK for early years (under fives) as well as sedentary behaviour, for which there is now evidence that this is an independent risk factor for ill health.
