Case Studies
Our Lady Immaculate:
This primary school in Liverpool has created an outdoor environment that offers its pupils a multitude of ways to encourage greater levels of engagement and co-operative play. With the installation of the outside learning / literacy area, the pergola, amphitheatre, wooden play lodge and playground markings, the school has achieved its objective in providing a stimulating environment in which the pupils can benefit from non-classroom learning and creative play. The environment is now colourful, stimulating and has a ‘wow’ fact.
Crown Lane Primary School:
Crown Lane Primary School in Streatham, London is a new-build school constructed in 2005 with just the bare minimum tarmac playground and grassy area. Since then, the school has significantly expanded and enhanced the outdoor play and learning facilities. The designated adventure play area, amphitheatre, playground graphics, planters, gardening club and sheltered quiet area has provided the children with a stimulating play and learning environment. The teachers can take full advantage of the outside teaching areas to provide non-classroom based learning.
St. Bernadette RC School:
Within the last two years, St. Bernadette’s primary school has been transformed from a drab and dreary looking school with falling numbers to a more welcoming, progressive school that provides stimulating outdoor play and learning facilities and has significantly increased its intake of pupils. Between March 2007 and September 2008, Sovereign undertook a phased implementation at the school, which now boasts several, separate play / learning areas for the Foundation, Key Stage 1 and 2 children.
Whale Hill School:
As recently as February 2008, the grounds at Whale Hill Primary School in Middlesbrough, were at their most basic. The area around the school, which was built in the sixties, consisted of tarmac and open school fields. The landscape was very much a blank canvas, with no fixed play equipment or designated quiet / play areas. Between April 2008 and January 2009, Sovereign installed a fully equipped, enclosed playground and a quiet outside learning area for the foundation children and an adventure playground for the Key Stage 1 and 2 children.
